Between having a crazy hectic start to the new year and getting sick, I found myself crawling into bed at night with no desire or energy to take care of my skin.

And while that's totally understandable when you're sick and your world feels up-side-down with general life stuff, I'd be leaving out an important confession: I overcomplicate things.

I tend to be at one extreme or the other - all or nothing- and more often than not that type of mentality sets me up for failure. 

Exercise, filming YouTube videos, eating healthy... you name it. I psych myself out and create an expectation list 20 miles long and wonder why everything overwhelms me.

It's something I'm working on in all facets of my life.

So, I realized it was time to drastically scale back my skincare routine to something that's effective and attainable on the days I'm feeling less-than-stellar.

The reality is you don't need a 10-step skincare routine. And you probably don't have time for it either.

TIPS FOR OIL CLEANSING

• Always apply with dry hands and dry face. Oil and water don't mix, so if you try to get your hands or face wet first you won't be able to get a good clean and you'll end up feeling like an oil slick.
• ​When you're ready to rinse your face, make sure you use a warm, damp washcloth to scrub every nook and cranny. Washcloths are a wonderful mild exfoliant, it'll help get the blood circulating, and most importantly it'll remove all the oil and debris.
• If you wear a lot of makeup or have acne prone skin, consider following up your oil cleansing with a treated cleanser like the Osea Ocean Cleansing Mud. This method is known as double cleansing and ensures a really deep clean.

TIPS FOR TONING

• Instead of using a cotton pad, try using washable/reusable facial pads like these cute ones from Marley's Monsters. (Hello super adorable, eco-friendly, budget conscious options.)
• Check your facial pad after you give your face a good sweep with your toner. Do you notice any gunk on your pad? If so, it means you aren't washing your face well enough and might want to consider the double cleansing method explained above.
• If you're using a facial mist instead of a toner, no need to sweep with a cotton pad. Just spritz on and let dry.

TIPS FOR EXFOLIATION 

• Keep in mind there are two types of exfoliants - physical and chemical. If you are currently broken out, stay away from using a physical exfoliant since it will likely burst any sores and spread the bacteria. Use a chemical exfoliant (like the Pixi glow tonic) until your skin clears up.
• Stay away from physical exfoliants that have broken up nuts or seeds in them - it's too abrasive on the skin and will cause minor tears because of the jagged edges. (I'm looking at you St. Ives.) 

TIPS FOR USING SERUMS/TREATMENTS 

• Make sure you apply on freshly cleaned skin.
• Remember to rub any excess product onto the backs of your hands since  unprotected exposure to the sun can speed up signs of aging. Might as well make the most of your product!

TIPS FOR MOISTURIZING 

• Everyone needs a moisturizer - even people with oily skin! In fact, using too many drying, acne-fighting products can sometimes be the cause of oily skin or breakouts. How's that you might ask? If skin thinks it's too dry it will go into overdrive to produce the oil it thinks it needs. So don't skimp on the moisture!
• If you want one moisturizer you can use both day and night, consider buying sunscreen to apply on top of your moisturizer for the day time, or use a foundation/tined moisturizer with built in SPF.

UPDATE: 11/17/17
I'm sad to report that Hourglass has sold their brand to Unilever, who not only tests on animals but also has actively tried to interfere with the success of vegan competitive brands. (Unilever attempted to sue Hampton Creek over Just Mayo.) For these reasons, I am no longer able to support Hourglass products since I do not purchase from brands with parent company testers. 

As an overall note, Hourglass is one of my favorite brands. I love a ton of their products, especially their liquid lipsticks and ambient light powders. While Hourglass is 100% cruelty free with no parent company testers, I will say their vegan products can be difficult to identify because the website and packaging aren't always consistent with the "vegan" label. And in this rare case, it actually works in our favor because they seem to have more vegan products than what's actually labeled. Make sure you double check the ingredients on the package and if you still aren't sure, you can e-mail their customer service team for clarification.

I love the holidays. It's a magical time to rest and recharge and celebrate being alive. A time to breathe and pause and reflect on what's important. Basically holidays are mandatory "chill out and calm the hell down" days and I fully support this.

​I feel you. I got you. As a lipstick junkie I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve reached for a badass color and then went, “Aw crap, NOW WHAT?” And since typically lipstick is the last thing we apply, we don’t always give it the spotlight it deserves. (I see you reaching for that safe nude lip.)
 
So if you’ve got a lippie you love but you never wear it because you don’t know what the hell to do with it, this tutorial is for you. It is a little more in-depth so in case you want the 30,000 ft summary here it is: keep everything else neutral. And I don’t just mean pick neutral colors. Use a combination of both warm and cool tones to make sure you really have a true balance. For example, in my crease I use two transition shades: one more warm (Tuffed Suede from Too Faced) and one more cool (Petal blush from Gabriel cosmetics). I remember my first retail artistry gig. I was fresh out of college and a good friend of mine helped me land a job working for Trish McEvoy. Making a living out of doing makeup and learning alongside so many talented artists was a freaking dream. Are you kidding me? How come growing up no one told me being a makeup artist was a legit occupation? I was soaking up as much information as possible and as fast as I could. Fascinated by all the colors and textures, I became curious about how makeup was made and what actually went into the products I adored so much.
 
I was reading “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” by Paula Begoun when I first learned about carmine (you can read more about carmine here). Red dye… crushed beetles… Wait WHAT!? WTF!? PEOPLE USE BUGS TO ADD COLORING TO MAKEUP? I was shocked. GROSS! WHY!? I remember coming to work the next day and telling some coworkers that there were bugs in our lipsticks. Before I could finish, people were frantically pulling open drawers, searching for a bug infestation. “No, not live and crawling around in our drawers," I explained, "they are actually IN the product!!” For some reason everyone seemed relieved by my clarification? Why was no one still panicked? Wasn’t bugs on your lips more gross than bugs in a drawer!?
 
In that moment a seed was planted and I would never look at makeup the same.
 
Since making the transition into vegan and cruelty-free makeup a few years ago, I found that dodging these sneaky (and icky) ingredients could feel daunting. It seemed like every conventional lip product contained carmine, and it was so annoying.
 
So in an attempt to make your lives easier (and bug-free), I’ve made this video and provided a list for you below with some of my favorite lip products. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but these are my current faves at the moment.

​Here’s the thing about Ashlee; the girl is cool as hell and to call her charismatic is an understatement. Her style is so damn chic and put together. Ask her where she got <insert trendy clothing item or accessory here> and she’ll probably tell you she found it at a thrift store.

Ashlee left her career as political strategist to make the world a better place, one eco-friendly tip at a time. If you haven't read her articles in Refinery 29 or various other publications, you may have seen her on Fox or ABC chatting about simple lifestyle changes you can implement that will greatly benefit the environment (and your wardrobe).  

Not only is Ashlee an expert on vegan and eco-friendly beauty and fashion, she’s also chock-full of interesting and thought-provoking stats. For example, did you know that every piece of plastic that’s ever been created STILL EXISTS today? That is a LOT of plastic. And it has to go somewhere right? If anyone has convinced me to up my recycle game, it's Ashlee.

Since Ashlee was going to be in town for the Texas Veggie Fair, I thought it would be a great idea for us to hang out, catch up, and play around with some fall makeup trends. We decided on two looks: the first centering around a sultry, gold metallic eye and the second around some fun, graphic liner.

What trends are you most excited about this Fall?
Bold berry lips and slouchy cozy sweaters always give me joy. As a child of the 90's, I'm stoked the 90's look is back. Babydoll dresses, Doc Martens, opaque tights, military jackets, Winona Ryder lips - it's a damn sexy and easy look I can totally get behind.

What advice would you give someone who is wanting to move towards a more eco-friendly lifestyle but doesn't know where to start?
Start small and start anywhere. I have a friend who started by just buying a reusable water bottle and that's become her thing. That makes a big difference. When you look at the enormity of issues we're facing - from animal welfare, environmental toll, human exploitation - it can feel like nothing you do will be enough. So, starting small and day-by-day, I've found creates a much more enduring change. Buy a cruelty-free lipstick (they're so gorgeous nowadays), shop at a resale store, hang with the critters at the animal shelter, enjoy a meatless meal, reuse something instead of immediately recycling - all of these things add up and create habits that build into better habits.

What are your top 3 must-have makeup items? 

1. A solid foundation to even out my fair skin. I adore Gressa's Minimalist Serum Foundation, which is especially lovely for keeping skin dewy in blustery Chicago winters.
   
2. Mascara (black). Currently using Two Faced's Better than Sex Mascara and yeah, it *almost* is.
   
3. Bold lipstick. Usually red, but lately I've been wearing Fierce by Red Apple Lipstick and Vampire by Kat Von D.

Where is your favorite place to shop for clothes?
These days, I'm shopping pretty much exclusively at resale, consignment, and thrift stores because I truly believe it's the gentlest on the environment. I do, however, love to support ethically-driven businesses like Modavanti, Bead and Reel, Nicora, Amour de la Terre, Petit Vour, etc. when I'm in-need of something specific that I can't find anywhere else.

Tell us about your brand, The Little Foxes. 
The Little Foxes is a blog, I suppose, but really it's more of a living portfolio. I never wanted to be a blogger, per se. Not that there's anything wrong with it, the term just always felt limited to me. I'm not interested in having a feed loaded with airbrushed and Photoshopped images of a life that's unattainable and predictable. I want to give people useful information, quality product scouting they can trust, real talk, and strategies for being more eco-friendly while enjoying life. I occasionally post recipes and giveaways of my favorite ethical products, but mostly it's a platform by which I promote and secure future magazine and television pieces on vegan lifestyle. My goal is to show, mostly via mainstream channels like national print and television, that living compassionately is easy, fun, warm, approachable, stylish, and sacrifice-free.
